“Stone Garden” is an iron sculpture created during my 2025 residency in Bandung, Indonesia. While I was deeply captivated by the overwhelming beauty of volcanoes, lakes, and waterfalls, I also confronted the reality of garbage-filled streets, revealing the city’s contradictions and fragility. This striking contrast became the origin of the work. On site, I made sketches before nature, then bent iron rods to trace those spontaneous lines in space, giving them three-dimensional form. The iron lines do not merely serve as formal elements; they embody intangible sensations such as light, air, and smell, reflecting insights I received from the place itself. By evoking the vivid presence of nature, the contradictions of the city are highlighted, and this tension resonates with cultural contexts. In Japan, Shinto has long revered nature, while in Indonesia, Islam shapes daily life, with communal practices sustaining unique ties to the natural world. This work seeks to explore the “gaze toward nature” that emerges at the intersection of these perspectives, questioning anew the human relationship with nature.

《Stone Garden》は、2025年のインドネシア・バンドン滞在制作から生まれた鉄の彫刻である。火山や湖、滝などの自然の圧倒的な美に魅了される一方、街にはゴミがあふれ、都市の矛盾や脆さに直面した。この鮮烈な対比が制作の原点となった。現地では自然の前でスケッチを重ね、その即興的な線をもとに鉄を曲げ、空間に描くように立体化した。鉄の線は光や空気、匂いといった無形の感覚を写し取り、土地から受けた気づきを象るものである。自然を描き出すことで都市の矛盾が際立ち、その緊張関係は文化的背景ともつながる。日本では神道的な自然崇拝、インドネシアではイスラム的な共同体性を通じ、自然への眼差しが異なる形で息づいている。本作はその交差点に立ち現れる「自然との関係性」を問い直す試みであった。
