In the summer of 2024, I participated in the “Barehands Residency” directed by Malaysian artist Juhari Said, and as a result, held a solo exhibition at the Langkawi branch of the National Art Gallery of Malaysia. During the residency, I focused on the fern plant Paku Langsuir, which was growing in the studio’s garden, and created works inspired by its symbolism in Malaysian mythology, where it represents the female ghost. I was drawn to this story and decided to explore it in my work. I photographed the surrounding landscape, printed the images on washi paper, and affixed them to the surface of the leaves, combining Malaysian light with Japan’s sun worship in its mythology. In the exhibition, I suspended the leaf works from the ceiling, creating an installation that made them appear to float through the space. The movement of the leaves allowed viewers to experience the presence of the jungle. The fusion of Japanese and Malaysian myths, set against the backdrop of Langkawi Island’s nature, held great significance for me.

2024年の夏、マレーシアのアーティストJuhari Said（ジュハリ・サイド）氏がディレクターを務める「Barehands Residency（ベアハンズ・レジデンシー）」に参加し、その成果としてマレーシア国立美術館ランカウイ分館で個展を開催した。レジデンスでは、スタジオの庭に生息していたPaku Langsuir（パク・ランスウィヤー）というシダ植物に着目し、作品を制作した。この植物はマレーシア神話で女性の亡霊を象徴するとされ、その物語に興味を持ったためである。スタジオ周辺の風景を撮影した写真を和紙に印刷し、それを葉の表面に貼り付け、マレーシアの光と日本神話の太陽信仰を重ね合わせた。個展では、葉の作品を天井から吊るし、空間に漂うように見せるインスタレーションを展開した。葉が揺れる様子が、鑑賞者にジャングルの気配を追体験させる効果を生んだ。日本とマレーシアの神話を融合させ、ランカウイ島の自然を背景に開催されたことに大きな意義を感じた。
