褐色の大地に隆起する3億年前の珊瑚の化石。通称、「大理石」と言われる結晶質石灰岩の産地である山口県美祢市の採石場へ行ってきました。
その目的は近年、注力的に制作している写光石の原料となる石探し。昨年末にマレーシア・ランカウイ島のレジデンスで触れた大理石に魅せられたことがきっかけで、日本でも探してみることにしたのです。
採掘場を訪れてみると、まずその広大なランドスケープに圧倒されました。まるで別の惑星に来たような、火星を想起させる非日常的な風景。鉄分を多く含む粘土質の赤土の下に見え隠れする白色の巨石たち。
一般に大理石と呼ばれるそれたちは約3億年前のフィリピン沖の珊瑚の化石なんだとか。途方もない年月をかけて日本列島へ移動し、マグマの地下熱で白く結晶化したもの。宇宙的な時間軸に想いを馳せながらその石に触れると、これまでとは全く違う創作意欲が湧いてきました。
まさに宇宙船地球号を体感した出来事となりました。この大地の恵みを使って、これから作品を制作したりワークショップを行うのが楽しみです。

300-million-year-old coral fossils rising from the russet earth. I recently visited a quarry in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture—a region famous for its crystalline limestone, commonly known as "marble."
My primary goal was to hunt for stones to use as raw material for my "Sha-ko-seki" (Light Reflecting Stone) series, which I have been focusing on in recent years. After being captivated by the marble I worked with during my residency on Langkawi Island, Malaysia, at the end of last year, I felt a strong urge to explore what Japan had to offer.
Standing in the quarry, I was immediately struck by the vastness of the landscape. It felt like stepping onto another planet—an extraordinary, Mars-like scenery. Massive white stones peeked out from beneath the clay-rich red soil, which is heavy with iron.
The marble we know today is said to have originated as coral reefs off the coast of the Philippines about 300 million years ago. Over an unfathomable span of time, they drifted toward the Japanese archipelago, eventually being transformed into white crystals by the intense heat of subterranean magma. Touching these stones while contemplating this cosmic timeline sparked a creative drive unlike anything I’ve felt before.
It was a profound experience of "Spaceship Earth." I am incredibly excited to create new works and host workshops using these gifts from the earth.
